How Our Recycling Works

When boxes reach the end of their reusable life, recycling is the next best option. Our recycling program collects used cardboard from businesses across Portland, sorts it by grade, and sends it to certified mills where it becomes new paper products.

Unlike curbside recycling where contamination rates can be high, our commercial collection ensures clean, properly sorted material that actually gets recycled — not downcycled or landfilled.

We offer free scheduled pickups for businesses generating consistent volumes of cardboard waste. Smaller quantities can be dropped off at our facility during business hours.

Our Recycling Process in Detail

From your loading dock to the paper mill, here is exactly what happens to your recycled cardboard at every stage.

01

Step 1: Collection and Pickup

Our trucks arrive on your scheduled day, equipped with the right vehicle for your volume. We collect loose cardboard, baled material, or a mix of both. Our crew handles all loading, including breaking down boxes that are still assembled. Pickups typically take 15-45 minutes depending on volume.

02

Step 2: Initial Sorting

At our facility, collected material is separated into three streams: boxes that can be resold as-is, boxes that can be refurbished for resale, and material destined for recycling. This triage step ensures the highest value use for every piece of cardboard.

03

Step 3: Contamination Removal

Recycling-stream material is inspected for contaminants -- plastic wrap, styrofoam, food waste, wax-coated cardboard, and other non-recyclable materials. Contamination rates in our commercial collections average under 2%, far below the 15-25% typical of curbside programs.

04

Step 4: Grading and Baling

Clean cardboard is sorted by grade (kraft/brown, printed, mixed) and fed into our industrial baler. Material is compressed into 1,000-1,200 lb bales for efficient transport. Each bale is weighed, tagged, and documented for chain-of-custody tracking.

05

Step 5: Mill Transport

Baled material is transported to certified recycling mills within the Pacific Northwest. We prioritize regional mills to minimize transportation emissions. Our primary mill partners are located within 150 miles of Portland, keeping the recycling loop tight and efficient.

06

Step 6: Pulping and Remanufacturing

At the mill, bales are broken down, mixed with water to create pulp, cleaned of inks and adhesives, and formed into new paper products -- typically new corrugated linerboard, containerboard, or packaging paper. The fiber can be recycled 5-7 times before becoming too short for reuse.

07

Step 7: Reporting and Documentation

You receive a detailed recycling certificate documenting the weight recycled, the receiving mill, and the calculated environmental impact (CO2 prevented, water saved, trees preserved). Reports are generated monthly for recurring clients and are formatted for ESG and sustainability disclosures.

Materials We Accept for Recycling

We accept a wide range of corrugated and paper-based materials. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of what goes in our recycling stream.

Accepted Materials

  • Corrugated cardboard boxes (all grades)
  • Brown kraft paper and paper bags
  • Cardboard tubes and cores
  • Corrugated sheets, pads, and dividers
  • Pizza boxes (grease residue is acceptable)
  • Paperboard (cereal boxes, shoe boxes)
  • Cardboard packaging inserts
  • Paper-based edge protectors
  • Corrugated displays and POP materials
  • Paper-based packing material

Not Accepted

  • Wax-coated cardboard (produce boxes with wax lining)
  • Wet or moldy cardboard that has structural breakdown
  • Cardboard contaminated with chemicals or hazardous waste
  • Plastic-coated or foil-laminated cardboard
  • Styrofoam and plastic packing materials
  • Bubble wrap, plastic bags, and shrink wrap
  • Wood pallets and crates
  • Metal banding and strapping

Not sure about a material? Send us a photo and we will let you know. We can often arrange separate disposal for non-accepted materials through our waste management partners.

Recycling vs. Reuse: Understanding the Difference

Both recycling and reuse are far better than landfill, but they are not equivalent. Here is how they compare on key environmental and economic metrics.

MetricReuse (Best)Recycling (Good)Landfill (Worst)
Energy requiredNear zero75% less than newN/A (wasted)
CO2 emissions0 lbs per box0.5 lbs per box1.5 lbs per box
Water usage0 gallons1.2 gallons per boxN/A
New trees neededNoneNone (fiber reused)Replacement needed
Material qualityPreserved at original gradeSlightly degraded each cycleDestroyed
Cost to businessRevenue from sellingFree pickupDisposal fees
Times material can cycle5-7 additional uses5-7 recycling cycles0 (terminal)

Our approach: We always prioritize reuse first. Boxes that can be resold or refurbished enter our reuse stream. Only boxes that cannot economically be reused are recycled. This hierarchy ensures the maximum environmental and economic value is extracted from every piece of cardboard.

Self-Service

Drop-Off at Our Facility

Bring your cardboard to our Portland warehouse during business hours (Mon-Fri 7am-5pm, Sat 8am-1pm). No appointment needed. Drive up, unload, and you are done. We accept any quantity from a single box to a full truckload.

Recycling Certifications and Compliance

Our recycling program meets and exceeds industry standards. Here are the certifications and commitments that back our program.

Zero-Landfill Guarantee

We guarantee that no material collected through our recycling program ends up in a landfill. Material that cannot be recycled through standard channels is processed through alternative recovery pathways.

Chain-of-Custody Documentation

Every bale of recycled material is tracked from your location through sorting, baling, transport, and final processing at the mill. Full documentation is available for audit purposes.

Regional Mill Partnerships

We exclusively partner with recycling mills within the Pacific Northwest, keeping transportation emissions low and supporting the regional economy. No material is shipped overseas.

Contamination Control

Our commercial collection model maintains contamination rates below 2%, ensuring that collected material actually gets recycled rather than rejected and landfilled.

Annual Sustainability Audits

We undergo independent annual audits verifying our recycling rates, landfill diversion claims, and environmental impact calculations. Results are published in our annual sustainability report.

Oregon DEQ Compliance

Our operations fully comply with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality regulations for waste transport, recycling facilities, and environmental reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Recycling

Everything you need to know about our recycling program.

Is your recycling pickup really free?
Yes, for businesses within our Portland metro service area. There is no cost for scheduled pickups at any program tier. We sustain this model by selling recycled material to mills, which generates enough revenue to cover collection costs. For locations outside our core area, a modest transport fee may apply for smaller volumes.
Do I need to sort or bale my cardboard before pickup?
No. We accept loose, broken-down, or even still-assembled boxes. Our team handles all sorting, breaking down, and baling at our facility. However, if you have the ability to flatten boxes and keep them dry, it helps us process material faster and keeps contamination low.
What happens if my cardboard is mixed with other materials?
Minor contamination (tape, labels, staples) is completely normal and does not affect recyclability. If your cardboard is mixed with non-cardboard materials like plastic wrap or styrofoam, we separate them at our facility. Heavy contamination (food waste, chemicals) may result in that portion being excluded from the recycling stream.
Can I get a dumpster or container placed at my location?
Yes, our Professional and Enterprise tier programs include on-site container placement at no additional charge. We offer open-top recycling containers in 2, 4, 6, and 8 cubic yard sizes, as well as compactor consultation for very high-volume generators.
How do I know my cardboard is actually being recycled?
We provide full chain-of-custody documentation for every pickup. This includes weigh tickets, receiving confirmations from the mill, and a recycling certificate with your specific environmental impact metrics. We are committed to radical transparency -- no greenwashing.
Can recycling help me meet city or state waste reduction requirements?
Absolutely. Oregon has mandatory commercial recycling requirements, and Portland Metro has specific recycling targets for businesses. Our recycling reports are formatted to help you demonstrate compliance with these regulations. Our team can also advise on waste reduction strategies to meet or exceed local requirements.
