Free, no obligation

Box refurbishment is the cornerstone of the circular economy for packaging. When a box is too worn for immediate resale but still structurally viable, our refurbishment process restores it to a condition where it can safely ship products, store goods, or serve any purpose a new box would. This extends each box's useful life by 3-5 additional cycles, extracting maximum value from the raw materials and energy that went into manufacturing it.

Our Portland refurbishment facility processes thousands of boxes per week using a combination of specialized equipment and skilled hand-finishing. Every refurbished box undergoes the same rigorous 6-point quality inspection as our used box inventory -- if it does not meet our standards after refurbishment, it enters the recycling stream instead.

The Complete Refurbishment Process

Six meticulous steps transform worn boxes into reliable, attractive packaging ready for their next assignment.

01

Intake Assessment

Each box is visually and physically evaluated. We check wall strength using a hand-held compression gauge, measure dimensional accuracy, inspect all flaps, and identify specific damage that needs addressing. Boxes that cannot be economically refurbished are diverted to recycling.

02

Deep Cleaning

Tape residue, adhesive labels, surface dirt, dust, and minor stains are removed using specialized tools and solvents that are safe for corrugated material. We use heat guns for stubborn adhesives and gentle scrapers that remove surface contaminants without damaging the liner.

03

Structural Repair

Soft corners are reinforced with corrugated corner patches. Torn flaps are repaired using industrial-grade kraft tape or replaced entirely. Delaminated wall sections are re-bonded with food-safe adhesive. Punctures smaller than 2 inches are patched from the inside.

04

Re-Scoring and Reshaping

Fold lines (scores) that have softened or shifted are re-scored using our precision scoring machine. This ensures flaps fold cleanly and boxes assemble into proper rectangular shapes. Warped boxes are humidified, reshaped, and dried to restore dimensional accuracy.

05

Cosmetic Finishing

Remaining blemishes are addressed: minor scuffs are buffed, discoloration is treated where possible, and the box exterior is given a final cleaning pass. For clients requesting rebranding, stickers, stamps, or stenciled logos are applied at this stage.

06

Final Quality Inspection

Every refurbished box passes our full 6-point inspection: structural integrity (compression test), wall condition, flap function, moisture status, cleanliness, and dimensional accuracy. Boxes are graded A, B, or C, labeled with their new grade, and moved to sellable inventory.

Before and After: Common Repair Types

Here is a detailed look at the most common types of box damage we repair, and what the finished result looks like.

Tape Residue and Label Removal

Before

Box covered in shipping labels, return labels, barcodes, and sticky tape residue. Surface feels rough and adhesive catches on other surfaces during stacking.

After

Clean, smooth exterior with all labels and residue removed. Surface is free of tackiness and ready for new labels or direct stacking without sticking.

Method

Heat gun application followed by food-safe solvent wipe and mechanical scraping for stubborn areas.

Torn Flap Repair

Before

One or more flaps torn along the fold line, typically 1-3 inches. Flap is still attached but does not close properly, leaving gaps in the box top or bottom.

After

Flap fully functional with a reinforced tear repair. The box closes completely and tape adheres properly to the repaired surface. Holds rated compression weight.

Method

Industrial kraft tape bridge repair for tears under 2 inches. For larger tears, a corrugated patch is bonded to the interior surface as reinforcement.

Soft Corner Reinforcement

Before

Corners have lost rigidity from compression or moisture exposure. Box leans or buckles when stacked. Cannot support rated weight on top.

After

Corners restored to full rigidity with corrugated corner patches. Box stacks perfectly straight and supports rated compression weight.

Method

L-shaped corrugated patches are cut to size and bonded inside the corner junction with food-safe adhesive, then allowed to cure under compression.

Re-Scoring Softened Fold Lines

Before

Fold lines (scores) have softened from multiple uses. Box does not fold into a clean rectangle. Flaps do not align properly when closed.

After

Crisp, clean fold lines that allow the box to assemble into a precise rectangle. Flaps align perfectly and close flush.

Method

Precision scoring machine re-cuts the fold line to the correct depth without penetrating the opposite liner, restoring the folding memory of the corrugated material.

Puncture and Hole Patching

Before

One or more holes or punctures in the box wall, typically from forklifts, sharp objects, or impact damage. Holes compromise structural integrity and allow dust or moisture inside.

After

Smooth, sealed wall surface. Patch is flush with the interior wall and does not reduce usable interior volume. Exterior shows minimal visible repair.

Method

Interior corrugated patch cut 2 inches larger than the hole in each direction, bonded with food-safe adhesive, and pressed flat during curing.

Environmental Benefit

Refurbishment uses approximately 75% less energy than manufacturing a new box and eliminates the need for raw materials entirely. Every refurbished box is one fewer box that needs to be manufactured from scratch.

Our refurbishment program extends the average box lifespan from 1-2 uses to 5-7 uses, dramatically reducing the overall environmental impact per shipment.

When you factor in the full lifecycle -- raw material extraction, pulping, manufacturing, transportation, and disposal -- a single refurbished box prevents approximately 1.5 lbs of CO2, 4 gallons of water, and 0.05 trees worth of fiber from being consumed. Multiply that across the thousands of boxes we refurbish each month, and the impact is significant.

Frequently Asked Questions About Refurbishment

Common questions about our box restoration services.

Can I send my own boxes for refurbishment and get them back?
Yes, our Box Refresh Program is designed exactly for this. You send us your used boxes, we refurbish them, and return them to you ready for another cycle. We pick up and deliver for free on recurring accounts. This is popular with businesses that invest in premium double-wall or specialty boxes and want to maximize their lifespan.
What percentage of boxes can be successfully refurbished?
On average, about 70-80% of boxes we receive for refurbishment are successfully restored to a sellable grade. The remaining 20-30% have damage that is too severe or too costly to repair economically -- these boxes enter our recycling stream instead. During the assessment phase, we give you an honest estimate of the refurbishment yield for your specific batch.
Are refurbished boxes food-safe?
Our refurbishment process uses only food-safe adhesives and solvents that comply with FDA 21 CFR 176.170 for indirect food contact. However, we recommend that food products always be enclosed in a separate food-grade inner liner or bag within the box, which is standard industry practice for both new and used corrugated packaging.
How much does refurbishment cost per box?
Refurbishment costs range from $0.10 to $0.75 per box depending on the size, type of repairs needed, and volume. Simple cleaning and label removal is at the low end; structural repairs like flap replacement and corner reinforcement are at the higher end. We provide exact per-box pricing after assessing your specific batch.
Can you add my company logo to refurbished boxes?
Yes, we offer three branding options for refurbished boxes: adhesive label application (most economical), rubber stamp printing (good for single-color logos), and stencil application (best for larger logos). Each method is priced per box and can be combined with the refurbishment process for a single turnaround.
What types of damage cannot be repaired?
Boxes with extensive water damage (warping, mold, structural breakdown), large punctures (over 6 inches), missing flaps, severely crushed walls, or chemical contamination typically cannot be economically refurbished. We will always tell you upfront during assessment if a box is better suited for recycling than refurbishment.

Give Your Boxes a Second Life

Do not throw away boxes that still have potential. Our refurbishment services restore them to working condition at a fraction of the cost of buying new.
