If your packages will be exposed to temperatures below 40°F during transit or storage, use acrylic tape. Hot melt adhesive becomes brittle and can fail in cold conditions.
Used boxes with residual dust or rough surfaces bond better with hot melt tape, which has an aggressive initial tack that grabs uneven surfaces immediately.
For packages over $500 in value, consider water-activated tape (WAT). It bonds permanently to corrugated, creates a tamper-evident seal, and cannot be peeled off and reapplied.
