How Many Boxes Do You Actually Need?
The number one mistake people make when moving is underestimating their box needs. Then they end up at a big-box store at 10 PM the night before the truck arrives, overpaying for whatever is in stock. Here is a realistic breakdown by room:
Room-by-Room Breakdown
Kitchen: 8-15 medium boxes (dishes, glasses, small appliances), 3-5 large boxes (pots, pans, bulk items), and 2-3 specialty dish-pack boxes with dividers.
Bedroom: 3-5 medium boxes per person (clothing, shoes, personal items), 2-3 large boxes (bedding, pillows), plus wardrobe boxes if you have suits or dresses you don't want to fold.
Living Room: 5-8 medium boxes (books are heavy — use small boxes!), 2-4 large boxes (décor, throw blankets, games), plus specialty boxes for artwork or electronics.
Bathroom: 2-3 small boxes per bathroom. Toiletries are heavier than they look.
Garage/Storage: Highly variable. Expect 5-15 boxes depending on accumulation level.
Home Office: 3-5 small boxes (files, supplies), 1-2 medium (printer, equipment).
Why Used Boxes Are Perfect for Moving
Moving boxes have the shortest useful life of any box application — you use them for one day, then they sit in your garage forever. Buying new boxes for moving is one of the biggest wastes of money and resources in the packaging world.
Used Grade B and C boxes are structurally identical to new for moving purposes. You are going to tape them, stack things in them, and probably scuff them up anyway. Save 50-60% and feel good about reusing.
After your move, sell them back to us. Seriously. We buy moving boxes in good condition. You might recover 20-30% of your original cost.
Pro Tips
- Over-order by 10-15%. Running short mid-move is far worse than having extras (which you can return or resell).
- Get a size mix. Most people buy too many large boxes. Heavy items (books, canned goods, tools) MUST go in small boxes or you will hurt your back.
- Label everything. Not just the room — list the 2-3 main items inside. "Kitchen — coffee maker, blender, mugs" saves hours of unpacking.
- Get boxes early. Place your order 1-2 weeks before the move. Do not wait until the last minute.
